Alice Springs

Alice Springs is the Northern Territory's second largest town after Darwin. It is located almost at the geographical center of the Australian continent. Alice Springs is surrounded by the vast deserts of the Australian Outback. The town itself provides a tourism base for those wanting to explore the outback itself.

Alice Springs has a comprhensive accommodation industry with a choice of motel accommodation, caravan parks, apartment style accommodation, hotels and resorts. There is even a casino if you feel like being a high roller for a while. The town center is full of souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes and is always bustling with activity.

Surrounding the town are many places of interest. Some are geographical and others historical. The MacDonnell Ranges surround the town and their barren rocky beauty is breathtaking. One of the favorite things for tourists to do is to take a hot air balloon ride over the region at dawn to understand the significance of this outback wonderland. The main north south highway and the transcontinental rail link from Adelaide to Darwin both run through Alice Springs and provide a popular link for travellers.

Tours from Alice Springs are available to both Kings Canyon and Ayers Rock. You can take a very long day tour or one that is extended and includes accommodation in the outlying resorts. There are also tours to many of the local attractions including the old telegraph station. Alice Springs has an excellent golf course and other sporting facilites. Like most of the other places that have accommodation in the Northern territory, Alice Springs can often be booked out with many coach and rail tours stopping over for a night or more. Do not come to Alice Springs without booking your accommodation well in advance.
